July 10, 2019 – JOLT – Problems deserve a little joy out

woman jumping for joy

“We don’t remember the days. We remember the moments.” – Cesare Pavese

The thrust of each day…

is solving problems. We solve them for our customers, for our families, our community, etc.

One of the reasons companies prize college grads and MBAs is their demonstrated ability to solve problems.

We elect our leaders based on their seeming and/or demonstrated abilities to address and solve problems.

No doubt, there’s big business, big politics and the biggest focus of life in solving problems.

So, it’s easy to start and conduct each day with a focus on the problems to be solved before us. Such is life, and many of us even enjoy it: they get our juices flowing!

Yet, somewhere in the midst, there’s this novel idea of living a happy and joyous life.

The problems, the solving of them, and the elimination of them may give us a rush of accomplishment (aka, “joy”)…but what about joy independent of problems?

Look, we all need to pay the bills (another problem) and, therefore, the constant addressing of problems will always be with us.

But can we do so on top of a resident way of joyful being? Or can we, at least, every few hours of every day, take a “Joy Out” to remember the happy place we’re truly playing for? And can we do that without substances?

How can you give yourself a natural Joy Out today, in the midst of those juicy problems you have your hands so deep into?

Throughout July, my core initial coaching sessions are $50 OFF. Whether you’re exploring a career change (Career Review Strategy Session), wanting to grow your business as an owner or executive (PlayGame Big Game Coaching Session), or interested in designing a second half of career and/or life based on play, passion and purpose (Back Forty Big Game Coaching Session), take advantage of the summer discounts to Joy Out those problems here.

July 3, 2019 – JOLT – Remembering to BE your FREE

American flag in a field

“Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better.” – Albert Camus

Tomorrow, we get another chance…

to celebrate freedom in the U.S.

Freedom is a concept with many meanings and tangents, each person with his or her own picture of what it is to be free.

Sometimes, the right to elect one’s legitimate government, free speech, freedom of the press, assembly, and so many others we, as Americans born in America, take for granted.

However, there’s a reason so many folks have immigrated to the US throughout history: those basic freedoms don’t exist everywhere.

But, beneath those foundational freedoms, yet supported by them, are other certain freedoms we don’t necessarily think about…such as the freedom to smile, laugh and self-express.

On a recent trip to Russia, I was informed by a Moscow tour guide that ONLY over the last decade or so will you now see everyday folks on the street sometimes crack a smile or, God forbid, seem to be happy or laughing for no reason.

My wife, originally from Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) even warned me — the down-home, strike-up-a-conversation-with-anyone, Texan-at-heart — to not smile at anyone on the metro because, in her time, that meant something salacious.

She also informed me of an old, Communist-Russia adage which says “Laughing without a reason is a sign of stupidity.”

So, the underlying message in that culture, which it seems to only now be rising from, is “Don’t show happiness. Don’t be friendly. Life is serious and significant.”

Again, that’s only one instance of the freedoms we have here that many in the world don’t.

So, during this celebration of our country’s historical, torch-bearing championing of freedom, let’s remember the big pillars of freedom and yet appreciate those friendly hellos on the street, bursts of laughter in outdoor cafes, and smiles given for no reason whatsoever because of where we’re blessed to live.

Perhaps the greatest freedom is the freedom to be.

Throughout July, my core initial coaching sessions are $50 OFF. Whether you’re exploring a career change (Career Review Strategy Session), wanting to grow your business as an owner or executive (PlayGame Big Game Coaching Session), or interested in designing a second half of career and/or life based on play, passion and purpose (Back Forty Big Game Coaching Session), you can take advantage of the summer discount here.

June 26, 2019 – JOLT – The stamina to try… again and again

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to try just one more time.” – Thomas Edison

If, at first, you don’t succeed…

then you’re probably on the road to growth and development.

We spend so much time planning and strategizing – IF we’ve even come that far with our countless ideas and splendid plans – that, once we actually launch/open for business/go live, there’s a lot of self-pressure to succeed.

Yes, success is sweet! And, many would-be flights crashed and burned before success touched Kitty Hawk.

So, can we be as excited about crashes, burns, fails, or even epic fails as we are about “success”?

There’s an old adage that success comes from good decisions; good decisions comes from wisdom; wisdom comes from experience; and experience comes from bad decisions.

Question is: are we willing to travel that path upward toward success?

Where can you take one of your recent “bad” decisions today and do a multi-level upgrade to success?

It may be “the road less traveled”…but you might as well leave your footprints on it.

Throughout June, I’ll be offering discounts on certain career and life-enhancing online programs…so stay tuned. Grab today’s offer above to get a $30 discount on any career service, even some which are already at Summer Special rates. Use coupon code “$30OFF” for any service here.

June 19, 2019 – JOLT – Inventing reasons to change

“Every success story is a tale of constant adaptation, revision and change.” – Richard Branson

Change can definitely be said…

to be one of the most difficult challenges of life…right up there with moving, taxes and death.

The good news is that it’s possible — for everyone, in any situation, at any time.

The bad news is that it generally requires a big enough reason to make the choice to change, a heavy enough pound (or more) of flesh to be given if we don’t.

Often, it’s only after the flesh has been taken that the real cost of resistance to change is realized.

However, it’s possible to foment a crisis, when necessary, to make required changes.

The word “foment” means to instigate or foster, such as when one creates a rebellion.

Perhaps we don’t learn the art of making up crises until we’re forced to develop that ability…but it’s an important life skill to nurture.

So, just for the sake of a good workout — and for building a muscle you may not utilize as much as others — in what area of life could you foment a crisis for yourself today…to make an overdue and necessary change?

Got enough reason to change?

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” – Leo Tolstoy

June 12, 2019 – JOLT – What your eye’s on gets bigger

“An instant is sufficient. Miracles wait not on time.” – A Course in Miracles

Can enough be said…

about the juiciness of miracles?

Sometimes we hear that word in conversation and cautiously begin to distance ourselves, thinking someone may be getting on a woo-woo train.

Yet, who can’t point to an unplanned relationship, unexpected instance of good fortune, unforeseen occurrence or happenstance turning out to be the best thing that ever happened to them?

We could take the position that, hey, life is life and what comes our way, good or bad, is just the luck of the draw or the roll of the dice.

Yet, even quantum physics is proving these days that we get more of what we entertain in the mind. The “Law of Attraction” has been given scientific legs over the last couple decades.

So…what you gonna look for? Whatever comes, or what you want to see?

Everyone knows the old explanation for the Reticular Activation System (RAS): if you begin thinking you want to buy a Prius, what do you start seeing everywhere? Priuses!

The RAS is a bundle of nerves at the base of your brain that filters out the important information in your environment.

It’s why, when you learn a new word, you start hearing it everywhere. It’s why you can be in crowd full of talking people and instantly hear when someone says your name.

All this means that you can choose what you want to see and hear every day: reasons for why life is just, well, “life”…or reasons why life is a miracle.

I see and hear great things coming for you this summer. Do you?

In June, I’ll be offering a 50% discount on certain career and life enhancing online programs…so stay tuned. Grab today’s offer above to create a career miracle this summer. You never know who you’ll meet sitting beside you on the beach or in the park. This season is the BEST for “stealth” relationship building. Be prepared with the “Dream Job Lifeline” Program. May 29, 2019 – JOLT – Did you catch that miracle?

“Miracles happen every day, change your perception of what a miracle is and you’ll see them all around you.”  – Jon Bon Jovi

Routine can be comforting…

and gives us a sense of stability, security and foundation. It helps us feel centered.

At the extreme, however, same ‘o same ‘o can slowly whittle away our sense of the miraculous.

Ever wonder why folks who engage in, say, a weekend inspirational workshop come out lit up and vibrant? It’s because their routine was broken up…and some awareness and mindfulness of the possibility of their life was put in.

Of course, without keeping the new mindset up and engaging in new structures or alternative routines, the old ways creep back…and we get back to knowing ourselves (and our life) in the same way we always have.

It takes work and diligent attention to live as if every day were a miracle. We have to wake ourselves up from the standard expectations of a standard day…all those standards of which satisfy our desire for security and comfort zones.

Fortunately or unfortunately — depending on how you look at it — some folks come close to exiting this life through some nearly-missed fatal health scare or accident. The close call wakes them up to the colors of the morning, the feel of hugging their loved ones, the grace of having a body that functions, the privilege it is to interact with friends and coworkers.

If we can learn from their experience, we can begin noticing the miraculous before we’re forced to.

What if experiencing the miraculous can come about simply by opening yourself up for one to occur for you today? What if it were that simple?

I’ll be watching alertly today, alongside of you.

Want some intentional support behind a miracle you’re wanting in your work, business, life? Schedule a complimentary 15min chat, or go here for a menu of many ways to open the up pathways.

May 22, 2019 – JOLT – How do you betreat yourself?

“In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion.”  – Albert Camus

To step away from the machine…

is sometimes the most challenging move we can make.

There is ALWAYS another…
…call that could/should/would be made.
…project or follow-up that ought to be handled.
…hole in the dike or problem that should be managed.
…next-level vision or dream that needs to be implemented.
…and so on, and so forth, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

We can become so hypnotized by the back-and-forth pocket watch of our work, business, routine, and schedule that the mere idea of retreating for sanity’s sake is quickly rationalized away as impossible.

But what’s possible inside a machine except more of the same? More of the same is never about possibility.

Think of it: a toaster’s job is to make toast. There’s no meaning involved for the toaster. It just makes toast.

Ideally, the difference between us and machines is that we can comprehend, appreciate, and be inspired by meaning.

A personal escape now and again — whether it be a 3-day silent retreat, a ski trip or hiking trek into the mountains, a regular walk on the beach every evening, or a simple 10-minute fresh-air flight from the cubicle — can reintroduce meaning to the machine.

Far better than a RE-treat, however, which implies going back, giving yourself a BE-treat makes you available for a less predictable future…because you’re more present.

How can you betreat yourself into the present today?

May 15, 2019 – JOLT – Personal roadwork ahead?

“You are pre-paving your future experiences constantly by what you think and feel and say.” – Abraham-Hicks

To pave a road…

is to make it smooth, easy to travel, on stable, durable substance vs shifting sand and gravel.

The investment in paved roads pays off in multiple ways, with us getting to where we want to be quicker with less strain on the vehicle.

If we take a few minutes (or even an instant) to apply this principle to our day, an upcoming meeting, or even swallowing a big pill, we can similarly get where we want to be quicker with less strain on our mental, emotional, and physical vehicle.

On the pill front, I sometimes take valerian root at night to ensure good, restful sleep. It seems to only come in a big capsule form, and often gets stuck when I attempt to swallow one.

However, upon applying the simple principle of pre-paving only a moment before, visualizing the pill going down easily, feeling the feeling (ahead of time) of being already relaxed as it travels down my throat, I found that the big pill didn’t pose a problem anymore.

It’s a simple idea, but ask yourself, “Do I take the time to pre-pave before…

–I get out of bed in the morning, envisioning an awesome day of unique surprises?”

–I speak to my partner, child, parent, sibling, coworker, prospect, client, etc., feeling the feeling (ahead of time) of harmonious communication?”

–going into my doctor’s office, ex’s home to drop off the kids, or sales team meeting, already embodying good vibrations and anticipating good news?”

–the necessary interactions I’m required to have with that ‘big pill’ of a boss, landlord, opposing counsel or in-law, playfully imagining a completely unexpected moment of real connection?”

Look, we can all take life as it happens, or we can have an ever so slight (or heavy) hand in directing it.

To twist a Robert Frost poem, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less [rough], And that has made all the difference.”

Invest in your personal roadways today. It can make all the difference.

May 8, 2019 – JOLT – Think boxing is tough? Try ex-boxing!

“It isn’t enough to think outside the box. Thinking is passive. Get used to acting outside the box.” – Tim Ferriss

It’s an easily thrown around phrase…

to “get outside the box” in one’s thinking and actions.

It’s touted by forward-thinking individuals intent to disrupt the status quo…and, for sure, there’s not a person on the planet who couldn’t stand a new approach in one or more areas of life.

Yet, easy to say, harder to do. Just think of where that box came from:

1) a bottom constructed on early-life experiences that had us make self-limiting decisions that went straight into our subconscious because we had no fully-formed prefrontal cortex

2) side panels built upon the wisdom and critiques downloaded onto us by those who “knew”

3) a top established by patterns of self-reinforcing beliefs and even chemical addictions within the body keeping the same thoughts and feelings about ourselves in place

4) many sharp corners from ingrained habits and even defensiveness arising from all of these parts coming together.

Whew!! Now that poses a bit more substance to be addressed when seeking to “get outside the box,” doesn’t it?

Look, it’s not ominous or impossible. Of course not. Society and our world progresses on the heels of ex-boxers.

Yet, it’s worthwhile to acknowledge the true, underlying dismantling and reconstruction work going on behind the scenes of ourselves when we take on such a mantle.

Who’s your favorite ex-boxer? What bottom, side, top or corner of your own box could you explore/dismantle to become more like them today?

May 1, 2019 – JOLT – Time to open a renew door?

“Around here we don’t look backwards for very long… we keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things because we’re curious… and curiously keeps leading us down new paths. ” – Walt Disney

May 1 has historically been celebrated…

to honor life and fertility returning to the world – the entrance of spring after the long, cold winter.

So, today is traditionally about newness, moving forward, expansion, prosperity and renewal.

Did you have anything better in mind to do today??

What one area of your life will you consciously choose to approach or regard newly today?

Will you revitalize your plan of utmost contribution to your employer or business, and/or is it finally time for being curious about other options?

Will you re-engage the spice and passion in your relationship, and/or are finding new ways to accomplish that long overdue?

Will you reinstate or elevate your health and fitness goals, and/or explore avenues for even a more optimized body and mind?

Will you review and recommit to the financial plan that gives you peace of mind, and/or find entirely new levels of prosperity to blow up that plan?

Look, today is just a day, like any other day, to open a new door and chart a new path.

Nothing says you have to engage in a new initiative.

But, if you’re still reading this JOLT Note, and you’ve already put time and attention into it, why not have something to show for it in the next 5 minutes?

Keep it simple. Pick something! One thing. Infuse new life and curiosity into it. Open a renew door or chapter…not because it’s May 1, but because you’re simply right now choosing to do so.

I just opened the door. We’re walking, we’re walking, we’re walking…

Want to discuss an area of renewal? Schedule a complimentary 15min chat, or go here for a menu of everything from career to business to life-purpose support services.
